Assembling A Double Bed

source
The modern double beds are very easy to assemble or disassemble. However, one needs to observe caution as some pieces and the mattresses may be too heavy for one person to handle. If you are moving and need to pack and unpack your bed, it is advisable to have another person as help for assembling a double bed.

The main parts of a double bed are:

Headboard

A double bed can have one headboard that spans the whole width of the bed. However, very often the double bed is split into two halves each with its own section of the headboard.

Each end of a headboard has slots to accommodate the side rails that may either slide into the slots. A headboard can also have studs screwed into which the side rails can be secured using nuts.

A headboard may also be equipped with one or more head lamps for having light while reading on a bed. The proximity switch on the headboard is used to turn on or off the headlamps.

Side rails

The side rails form the sides of the bed frame with one end secured to the head board and one to the foot board.

If the double bed is splittable into two halves, each half contains two side rails. If the double bed is one full size bed, it may have two or three side rails. The third side rail in this case runs in the middle along the length or across the length. Most often the securing mechanism for this middle rail is similar to that used for the side rails and hence I prefer to include this piece in the category of the side rails.

Foot board

The footboard is the piece that runs parallel to the headboard but on the opposite end of the bed. As the name suggests, one would sleep with the feet towards the foot board.

The headboard, side rails and footboard are joined together to form a rectangular bed frame.

The side rails have a lower edge in the form of a small shelf that supports the box spring. However, some designs of double beds do not use a box spring but have a flat top made up of plywood boards. The flat board can be in one single piece or split into two halves for flexibility and convenience.

Assembling a double bed or disassembling one does not need many tools. The design that secures the side rails by simply sliding them into the slots on the headboard and foot board needs no tools. The design that needs securing them using nuts would need a spanner or an appropriate screwdriver.

The design of the beds allows even a novice or a common person, with no technical skills, to assemble or disassemble a bed with minimum or no tools.
