The main types of bed sizes available in the market are:

The standard beds sizes given above represent the size of the mattress. The bed frames are slightly larger than the bed sizes given above to accommodate the mattresses on the bed comfortably.
Why is it important to get a standard size bed?
You may not replace the bed too often but you would be needing bed linens including the fitted sheet, bed sheets, bed skirts and more. All the bed linens available in the market are according to the standard sizes. If you get a customized bed of the size of your choice, you might still need to use the mattress of the standard sizes else it would be very difficult to find the bed linen that are a proper fit on your bed. Instead of buying the bed linen that is easily available in the market, you would need to get it custom prepared if you do not use the standard bed sizes.

The above bed sizes are popular only in the US. However, in Great Britain and Australia, the sizes are more or less the same, but they are called by different names.
What is a double bed?
A double bed is smaller in width as well as length than the queen size bed. The double beds go by the same name and have the same size in most parts of the world. In the US, the double beds are called as full size beds. The actual frame of a double bed may be assembled into one piece. Some manufacturers often have two beds that when put side by side form the “double bed”. This design comes handy to move or transport the bed. Homes with smaller rooms, sometimes end up keeping the two beds separately to have a more optimum use of the space.
The mattress of a double bed should be bought according the design of the bed frame. If the frame can be separated into two smaller beds, the mattress should be separate able too. However, when two mattress are put side by side, there is often some unevenness in the middle at the join, which becomes uncomfortable for sleeping together.
If two single or twin beds are put side by side, would they be called a “double bed”?
Well, since they would be literally two bed, you may call them double bed but a mattress of a true double bed would not fit since a standard double bed is smaller in width than two beds of single standard size are put side by side!
What are some space saving designs available for double beds?
Double beds, as described above, are often made up of a splittable bed frame that can divide into two. The mattresses on these beds need to have firm edges so as not to sag in the middle when the two parts of the double bed frame are put side by side.
The splitting feature of a double bed makes it easy to move the bed around if needed inside small sized rooms. In order to save space, each double bed can be fitted with an storage option to utilize the space under the bed. A double bed can be fitted with drawers or each side of a double bed can be a simple box where the lid of the whole box becomes the support for the mattress. This design allows to use the complete space under the bed. However, since the storage space can be filled in with other unused mattresses or other other items, the total weight of the bed becomes too heavy defeating the purpose of having a split frame design.
